On Friday, February 28th the Kindergarten classes from Crestview Heights School headed out on an epic adventure. They have been studying to answer the question, “what makes communities different?” How better to answer that question than to explore their own community?
The cold misty weather did not stop this troop of young learners from venturing out into the world. Their first stop was at the Waldport Public Library where Sharon McCrum read a book about frogs in recognition of Leap Year! They also met Riley the Reading Dog. Next up was a quick stop at Washington Federal Savings. Students got to take a close look at money to see the unique markings that make our money special. They also learned that they can open a savings account with just $5.
Central Oregon Coast Fire & Rescue was their next stop. Many of the children had seen a fire truck before, but getting into the fire truck and ambulance were a first-time experience for most.
Seashore Family Literacy hosted the group for lunch, and the children were able to visit the JOY Garden where they had visited earlier this year. Their observations of the difference between their earlier visits and now were very insightful! They’re excited to go back in the spring to help plant the beds.
After lunch the Kindergarteners walked to Waldport City Hall where they met Mrs. Morris, who taught them about City Council and gave them some great news about what the City Planner is working on. They also met Deputy D. who showed them his car, and even let them sit in the driver’s seat!
From City Hall the explorers walked all the way to Pacific Sourdough (recently named one of the best bakeries to visit in Oregon!) where they were greeted with “yummy smells” and a surprise box to take back to school. Following that quick stop they headed over to Ray’s Food Place where managers Scott and Sheryl gave the students a behind-the-scenes look at where they buy their food.
The day was finished up with a return to Seashore Family Literacy’s Center for Learning, where they had a snack before getting back on the bus to return to school.
The teachers are so proud of the children for representing their school so well. They were kind, safe, and helpful at each stop along their journey. Their hosts said how impressed they were and even invited them back again, which is the best compliment of all! The teachers want to thank the brave volunteer chaperones who came along. Without them, the grand adventure wouldn’t have been possible.
