On Thursday, January 30, 2020, the Waldport Public Library held a S.T.E.A.M. Fair for kids of all ages in home school or public school. Students were asked to answer the question “How can my project help someone I know or the community at large?” They were asked to use Library books, data bases, presentation boards, and oral or video presentation. They were expected to use the some or all of the elements of S.T.E.A.M.–science, technology, engineering,  arts, and mathematics in their inventions.

Sally Edward’s, from the Oregon Coast Aquarium, judged the presentations. First prize went to Judah Olson of Waldport for his “Self Watering Chicken Coop” prototype. He and his family intend to use his idea to build a self-watering chicken coop to help their family’s chickens. Other participants included, Danora Trammell’s K-9 Crate Cooler; Samantha Trammell’s “Common Sense” (Aromatherapy); Morgan Olson’s “Chicken Helper”; RJ Miner’s “Hay Mover & Cutter”; Kimber Miner’s “Kindling Layout Pad”; and Tommy and Aiden O’Bayley’s separate takes on “Hamster Habitats from Recycled Materials.” Each participant–and guests–received S.T.E.A.M. based prizes provided by a local patron, gifts from an out-of-state donor, and local businesses.

To add to the fun an interactive Wind activity table provided by the Franklin Institute’s Leap Into Science Wind project was available for the participants to learn in a fun manner about the power and effects of wind and why it is important.
