Families visiting Waldport Middle/High during this year’s conference day experienced something a little different. Instead of traditional conferences during the day, staff hosted a student showcase that allowed families to see firsthand what students have been learning in their classrooms.
The event featured a wide range of hands-on activities and performances. Music students presented a percussion performance, math students demonstrated their 8th grade “Bungee Barbie” project, and AVID students hosted a gallery walk highlighting their work. Throughout the building, families had opportunities to explore classroom projects and talk directly with students about their learning.
In the gym, students from Philip Reed’s computer science classes and robotics club created an interactive exhibition where visitors could experience their work up close. Families learned about the students’ partnership with the Oregon Coast Aquarium and their work using remotely operated vehicles (ROVs). Visitors also had the chance to test drive competition robots and challenge robotics team members to demonstrations.
Computer science students also showcased their coding skills by flying drones through a scaled course they had programmed themselves, giving families a real-world look at how coding and engineering skills are applied.
For many families, the showcase offered a chance to see their students step into the role of teacher, explaining projects and demonstrating skills they’ve been developing throughout the year.
