UPDATE

Dear Lincoln County School District Family,

This following is another update from the District. I hope that everyone is finding a way to stay positive and uplifted. It is going to take giant reserves of strength and resilience to keep on going and doing the best for our children, staff and families. Our deep love and abiding care of our children will help to develop those reserves in each one of us and help us to keep marching forward.

Here’s our Update:

  1. The LCSD is figuring out how we can give Athletic Refunds. This is due to the fact that the Oregon School Athletic Association canceled all of the spring season and people already paid the fees for it. We may have other refunds to plan for as well. More information about how to do that will be forthcoming soon. Please stand by.
  2. This is Budget Season for Oregon school districts and LCSD is no exception. Our first Budget Committee Meeting is Thursday May 14 and will be held in person at Newport HS for the members of the Committee and by Zoom for everyone else. Members of the Budget Committee may also decide to meet with Zoom. There are many aspects of the State School Fund which is the funding behind school districts including what happens with the newly approved Student Investment Account funding. Please hang in there with us as we try to figure out our budgets. More to come on this as the weeks go by.
  3. Distance Learning for All or DLFA has been developed in LCSD. Tomorrow April 15 the secondary program begins in earnest and then Monday April 20 the elementary program begins. DLFA is a digital, computer based, video based approach to education. However, it needs to be said that not all kids are going to access education this way and they will be able to access instructional materials via books, paper and pencils as well. We know that the majority of the educational approach needs to be virtual but every student and how they learn needs to be examined and met in the best way possible. PLEASE see our website for details.
  4. Communication with Parents/Guardians/Families has been a huge effort on the part of the teachers, support staff, principals and vice principals. We are super aware that we may be calling you multiple times a day, at different times of the day than are usual and that we may be providing a lot of information to you. Please know that in no way do we wish to overwhelm you! We are trying so hard to let you know that we care, we want to provide meals and education to your children and that we want to be good partners with you as we reach out to you under very strange circumstances. PLEASE don’t be overwhelmed. Just do what you can do and then take a break. This situation is exhausting so be good to yourselves.
  5. Chromebooks have been given to more than 3000 students. If a family has more than 3 children grades K-8, you can request an additional chromebook. Please just follow the process we have advertised on our website and we will arrange to get it to you. Phenomenal work has been done by our wonderful technology department.
  6. Meals are still going out to about ½ of all LCSD students-that is about 3000 boxed meals per day. The line staff are working SO hard. They appreciate it when you say hello and say thank you. We are able to provide THREE meals a day in one box. This is a blessing for the district to do for our community. We have had help from our community. To name just a few the Newport Boosters, TLC Credit Union, and T Mobile have helped us feed kids. We will serve meals every day for kids until the summer. We will figure out what we are doing for the summer later on.
  7. Graduation Ceremonies will be planned. While we may not know as of today what they will be or when, they are going to happen. As soon as the stay at home order is lifted, we will be safely and thoughtfully hosting graduations in each of our 4 areas. Again, stay tuned.
  8. High School Guidance Grades 9-11 were discussed today. Students will probably be given a Pass/Incomplete at the end of this year for their classes depending on what they had up to March 13 and what they complete after that. If a student receives an Incomplete, they will be able to make up their work in multiple ways. Details and ideas to follow soon. It is important for high school students who may not have accessed supplementary learning materials to connect with their school and teachers to find out what standards need to be met in order to meet these credit earning requirements. More on this topic to come.

PLEASE check your individual school websites for wonderful information and positive videos. The work that has been created by this school district is amazing. People are working around the clock to develop educational plans for our kids. Normally, an online school is planned over the course of an entire year-I know-I have done it. What LCSD has done so far is nothing short of miraculous. I am so proud of everything our staff has done.

Stay Healthy and Stay Safe

LCSD Superintendent

ACTUALIZAR
